Hot Breakfast Cereals

We’ve been enjoying hot teff grain cereal lately; it’s a nice change from pancakes. The cereal is easy to make, as long as you can boil water. It’s also fun to throw in whatever fruits you  have around, fresh or dried, and top with a sweetener- honey, agave, maple syrup or sugar. We’re also trialing rice right now so this morning, I made the boys hot rice cereal. I use Bob’s Red Mill for both of these grains. I’m not sure what other brands are out there, but they stock Bob’s at our local health food store and I’ve always been really happy with it in regards to not running into cross-contamination. Here’s the recipes, enjoy!

Hot Teff Cereal

2 cups water

1/2 cup teff grain

dash of sea salt

1 tablespoon agave, or other sweetener*

handful of raisins

peach, chopped

When water begins to boil, add teff grain and sea salt. Turn down to simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes, until the grain soaks up all the water. Stir occasionally. When done, add agave, raisins and peaches and mix well. Enjoy!

*Any combination of sweetener and fruit can be used.
